I’ve done it again! Left too many days between this post and the last and can’t decide which of my pastimes and mental preoccupations to write about. So I think free flow is the only way forward.
Right now I’m particularly nervy about Ruben’s essay writing homework which he is undertaking at the last minute, in his hostel bedroom too far away for motherly assistance. This may be just as well since the last two we hammered out on the final hour of the final day of the last two weekends and with very little approval from the teacher. I took this quite personally since my involvement was huge. I wonder whether the negative comments in red had anything to do with words such as ‘ambivalence’ and ‘coincidental’ which were unlikely to have come from Ruben’s fine but 14 year old brain.
When I was Ruben’s age I was particularly awful at essay writing. My mind would blank, I felt like a rabbit in headlights, I’d sweat and then much more important things like cleaning under the bed or taking up the hem of my school skirt would take precedence. The worst time was exams when I couldn’t escape to a more comfortable activity and had to sit in a whirrr of nerves and mental block.
Me thinks I am projecting…I will think positive thoughts and stop this worrying rant right now…he’ll be fine!
So on to activities with photographs. Well, I have been very busy in the studio with all sorts of Christmas orders which I keep presuming will stop what with the risk of dodgy Christmas post. But no, there are faithful souls still ordering on line.
I’m afraid this is the only photograph I’ve taken since light at this time of year comes and goes in the whiff of a cat’s fart and forgetting to photograph in that millisecond is easily done.
While furiously sewing orders I have been listening to the most incredible music. The best for calm concentration and total tranquility in my estimation: Bach partitas and sonatas for solo violin played by Rachel Podger. I am absolutely loving it and have made it my firm resolution to learn one partita a year on my own violin. I’ve started with the second movement of Partita no1 in B minor because it’s a hell of a lot easier than the first movement with bar chords which would be hard to play on a piano let alone a violin…still,I’m determined. This exercise is proving exacerbating and thrilling at the same time. Thrilling because I haven’t really attempted or felt in the slightest bit compelled to play violin since I was 13 years old and now, for the first time in many years I actually want to . Exacerbating because I can’t yet achieve that seamless and calming tone that turns Bach from a race to the finish line to meditative ecstasy. Still, I’ll struggle on.
I’m aware this all makes me sound like an interfering, high brow mum with very snobbish tastes in music. In my defence, I also listen to Madonna and I’m particularly partial to a spot of Kanye West and I’m very good at completely ignoring the children to pursue my own creative reverie.
Oh…phones ringing, better go.

David (postmaster) and I have a new game to quell the tedium of endless parcels. I say something to David in the accent of the parcel destination and he has to guess where it’s bound. Today was Nevada which he struggled with even though I babbled in my best mid American accent (he was fairly close with Nebraska though), and then Middlesex. I accepted London given that my cockney is not great at the best of times and with no regional subtlety. I can’t wait for Wales or Uganda but it would be a miracle if he guessed Newcastle. I , in my very infantile way am enjoying this game immensely but I think David may be bored already!
So yesterday I finaly managed to fully complete the Eco Motives order with two grass lamps.
The lampshade drums have been sitting in a box in the porch for an embarrassing length of time, waiting for a moment of calm in which I can tend to them. It was nice to cover the drums again. I have lately been sending the fabric down to the drum maker which means they attach the fabric directly on to the drum omitting the need for the rolled edge shown above. I do kind of like the structure of my way though.
I’d like to list these on etsy but the cost of posting lamps to the states would be more than the cost of the lamp itself. Maybe NOTHS would be a safer bet.
One more thing. Check out this link

My sister was the final performer at the Trad music awards 2008. I was feeling so proud with tears running down my face as I watched. You do have to shift the play browser forward to about 1hour 25 mins if you just want to catch Mairi, however the whole show is fairly entertaining if trad’s your cup of tea.
The skies were incredible yesterday. Look at this

As if button eyes and lanolin content are not challenge enough, now it turns out that Lavender…yes lavender must not exit our shores.
Hamish MacColl, adopted by our community nurses granddaughter, was all set to venture to the far east to a world of giant bunnies and overgrown buttercups. He was made to suffer the indignity of an airport scan and then all furore when flower heads showed up in the stuffing. I’d forgive them for thinking he was doped to the eyeballs, I mean just look at the squiffy eyes not to mention the complete lack of motivation. However, the customs officer was dutifully informed that the suspicious substance in the stuffing was only lavender.
But apparently, lavender mustn’t venture. If anyone can tell me why I’d be delighted to know.
So poor Hamish has had to return to gloomy Manchester and goodness knows how he’s coping.
I’m going to tell you a secret now “Hamish’s brothers have been posted EVERYWHERE!”
Ignorance was bliss!

How long has it been? A week, two maybe? How that happens I have no idea but life took over and swamped my every waking moment with other things. Blog was left unattended.
However, it’s not as though I’ve been loafing aimlessly about the sofa, ohhhh no no: Christmas fever is gradually intensifying on the island…hall decorations, mulled wine get togethers, festive discos and for some reason drop ins and hang outs happen far more frequently when the nights are long.
But aaah…the short days are sweet perfection with frosted greens and sherbet skies.

Kilcheran loch from Baligrundle hill. My studio lies in the trees behind the loch.

In the sileage field the grey lag geese gossip endlessly.

and the heron takes to the air with a great heave of it's vast wings. I apologise for prompting such effort.
In the studio a seemingly endless queue of Christmas orders are sewn up and posted out to a sound scape of John Martyn, Bebel Gilberto and most importantly Wayne Dyer interpreting the Tao te Ching.
Here’s some of the work they encouraged today:
Now with all that frost and and winter chill ( encountered big time during our fencing slog on Sunday) I have succumbed to a very blocked nose and aching sinuses so I had better shoo it away with some shut eye.
Night night…nice to be back!

Photos just in from One Eco Home of a low carbon ‘Retrofit and Replicate’ interior which they were asked to design for Hyde homes. Spot Mogwaii pebble lamps and lumbar cushions in the scrumptious linden green.

and the pebble lamps which I never did see complete as they were sent straight from the drum maker to client.
I remember working with that glorious green (see cushions complete). How I would relish another opportunity…hint!
The eco re fit seems to have attracted not only political attention (the new concept in carbon efficient housing will be monitored by the government to assess whether it could be a model for future developments in housing), but also a media flurry for TV or radio to coincide with the governments launch of the low carbon homes strategy on the 16th December.
Well done Hellen and Kate…a job beautifully executed as always!
It just occurred to me: Is execute (kill) and execute (carry out) spelt in the same way? I’m feeling a little nervous now. OK..I’ll word it a different way.
Well done Kate and Hellen…another stunning interior!

There are many occasions when I wish this was an audible blog, if only to torture your ear drums just a little bit.
Tom is practicing his bag pipes… need I say more? Bashy the cat is howling with every harmonic, Tom looks like a small, pink Dizzy Gillespie and I am trying to encourage an air of calm and supportive encouragement in the face of mega decibels.
It is surely karma that brought bagpipes to my family. I knew from the first moment I met Tom that he would be a blower, and that he surely is. I did try to steer him gently away from the sight or influence of bag pipes…knowing all too well that they were his destiny and my least favourite instrument.
But, the double whammy of Angus MacDonald playing a haunting and powerful reel at a Lismore ceilidh combined with one of the best pipers in Scotland moving to the island was more than my stubborn resolve could bear and I crumbled and Tom now pipes.
I am learning to love it. To respect the light dance of the grace notes, the dependence of the instrument on the moisture from the player in order to live, sing and respond. This is a beast quite different in nature to my instrument. It is a proud animal needing attention to thrive and as a result of my ignorance and awe I have to stand back and let Tom take the reigns and that is good!
