I kept thinking about Yorick today, working on a roof in Appin poor soul, in the midst of rotten great loaves of grey cloud with all their fat rain and hail. Of course, I meerly looked at them occasionally and took this pic when the sun broke through the cloud in front of the studio. Don’t you just love that gun metal grey and silver thing? It’s just occurred to me, this picture could make a great banner background for the Lismore crafters etsy shop (if ever we get round to doing one)

I also made a hat and two brooches for an etsy client and finally managed to cut all the rectangles for the next project: a loose sofa cover for Mary in that lovely tweed and tartan that I use for the loopy’s. 18 metres of piping done and only another 9 to go! The amount of piping needed for a moderate sofa defies belief. Anyhow, I’ll keep you posted on the process for those of you interested.

Cabbages and Tea

Cabbages and Tea

Once again the day came around when Lismore residents have the opportunity to off load surplus courgettes, carrots, cabbages and many more veggies on those members of the community with a notion to buy. All proceeds go to the hall committee, of which I am a member.

I was late, very late.  I had misread the price for tea and sandwiches as the time the sale started and arrived AN HOUR after the start. This is becoming a very embarrassing habit and I am trying to visualise, in the hope of actualising timeliness. I fear I am getting a reputation.

However, everyone was quite forgiving and I spent the next hour ardently washing tea cups and clearing tables in the hope of absolving some of my tardy sins. I also ate far too much cake.

Looks great, but what to do with it?

And now… for something completely different!

I was having a conversation with a friend at our craft night/excuse for  a lot of red wine, chocolate and tongue wagging, about what sells on etsy. Ann and I  thought it had to be something useful: knitting bags, car rubbish bags, toy bags, (why bags I’m not so sure). But then I did a bit of research and look what I found!

Now how do you explain that?…or this

Apple Jacket

Quite ridiculous in terms of practical necessity, but somehow utterly gorgeous and “must havish” if only for the fact that they are so completely bonkers! Could you really convince yourself that you need a jacket for your tea bag? Do you know…I think I could and I think I’m doing it right now!

Jacqueline knits…I love your work!

Padded cell!

My studio has effectively turned in to a padded cell, piled to the brim with cushions of all shapes and sizes. If I did take the notion to self harm I would have some difficulty for the amount of feather down. Still, there’s always the scissors…

Not long now and they’ll be gone, Hurray!!

Greeny silk cushions and a throw, in progress.

The silk cushions are now complete and this afternoon’s task was three more Mogwaii felt cushions and two lamps.

Apart from being my favourite read of all time, selvedge magazine is just perfect for weighting down the glued disk on the moth moon lamp before it is sewn.

Where did the day go?

Today was the kind that I’d like to have go on for ages! The skies were huge and high and pale blue through to transparent. The water shimmering  and silver and the air fresh and smelling of sunshine.

An early start driving Ruben and Yorick to the boat and Tom coming too for the ride. Good to rise early because it meant I could turn the water pump on before work when I’m feeling fresh(ish), rather than out of necessity at dinnertime when I’m not.

Regardless of my early start I was late to the studio. I compiled a long list of to dos and ended up crossing off item 1 and getting stuck on no. 2. Still, at least chocolate grass blind is now, finaly, finished!

Almost ready to go

Why did we move to Lismore?

Here’s a response to Joe’s comment below. I was going to send you an email Jo and then I thought, maybe this is something other people might want to know too so I’m blogging it.

My mum and Dad bought a small, run down cottage on lIsmore when I was 1 1/2 years old. A cottage with two rooms and a tiny attic. They were drawn to the island because both had spent time here as children, my father because his grandmother was from here and my mother would come for camping holidays.

Every year my three sisters, mum and dad and me would holiday on the island swimming in the lochs, exploring under blackthorn thickets, looking for crabs under stones, dancing in the hall, camping with friends, making hideouts, the list is endless.

As a teenager I was more interested in Edinburgh, clubbing, town life and friends and then went on to study in London and during this period I spent very little time on the island, but whenever I did I was always immediately welcomed back in to the community without a flicker of distance. I remember once arriving back on the island after an absence of maybe four years to Archie shouting “Sarah Campbell, how are you doing…jump in to the tractor and I’ll give you a lift to the cottage.” Coming from London it was quite overwhelming to recognise that here was a place where you were never forgotten and people would not forget your name or your face. I realized that over the years of being on this island my family had become part of this gem of a community.

Yorick and I got together and had Ruben, we were living in London but occassionaly came to Lismore for breaks and that’s when the strong, powerful draw of the island began. We would walk past ruins and dream of renovating them and living on the island and  plan potential business ventures. The children, Tom appeared in 1998, adored the island where they had absolute freedom to roam and cycle and camp and make hideouts and all the things that children should be able to do but don’t because of cars and television. This went on for years, eight to be exact. Every time we came to the island we would leave committed to selling up and moving  and then three weeks later life would take over and we would scare of the idea.

My bond with the island had become so powerful that every time it came to leaving I would be choked with tears and miserable for the following day or so. i remember once arriving on the island and walking up the hill behind the cottage where you can see the complete panorama of the mountains crowning Loch Linnhe from Ben Nevis to Glencoe, right down to the paps of Jura, Mull and then the wild, barren regions of Morvern and Morar  and the sun painted glow on the water between, and I realised this was where my heart is, this is my home and the idea of not being here was devastating. It was as if some force had gotten tired of subtly sending the message of where we had to be and on this occassion punched me with it.

A plot came up for sale on the island and we decided to go for it. The sale fell through but we had made our mind up and moved anyway. It was the best decision of my life and I have never looked back. Two years later and after a series of failed plot purchases we now own the croft where my great grandmother was born and that’s a story for another time.

Part of our croft and everything to do!

Part of our croft and everything to do!

I have friends who have moved to the country and have been misearable. Generally it’s because of the isolation or feeling that there are no kindred spirits around. It’s different here. Lismore is a vibrant and very active community where there are endless opportunities to meet people: on the boat, passing on a the single track road, at the shop, at the ceilidhs, dances, whist drives, meetings, craft nights, yoga. everyone knows everyone and sometimes the relentless and endless social calander can become too much and you have to escape the island for peace and quiet.

But, you know, I’d rather have it this way anyday and suspect I will be here ’til the end of my days. So Jo, I hope this inspires you to follow your heart and take a leap.

xx Sarah

Silk throw detail

Silk throw detail

Strange combination I know…but it works. I’ve been given some more of the beautiful silk panels to work with by one eco home with a view to more cushions and throws. Some are peachy/grey combinations and the others are greens and greys. The peach work well with a mocha/charcoal tweed and a sea green tweed arrived today to back the others. I love the diversion from wools to silks. The fabric responds in such a different way to sewing, ironing…

Two throws and 6 cushions down, and more to emerge. They’ll be gracing the shelves of a shop in the Kings Road, London. I don’t know the name yet but for those of you just itching to buy I’m sure one eco home can give you all the details. Click on the pics for links.

In the clouds

Today I cycled to work through a thick, dewy cloud. The small particles of water misted my face and hair and I arrived soaked to the skin. Even gortex couldn’t repel this weather. But you know, there was something meditative, eerie, so still about this morning. The dewy cobwebs quivering ever so slightly on the rylock fencing. The grasses and mombresia stooping with the weight of their jewels.

Lismore Community web site

Last night we had a meeting in the hall to discuss the Lismore community web site.

Up until now Teenie and Pauline have been running it more or less single  handedly and it’s just become too much. As us bloggers know  it is no mean feat to gather and spread news and that’s just for one…how about a community of 176 (or thereabouts).

Anyhow, the meeting was a success with a committee of 10 folk volunteering their abilities in either news and content or technical.I had to smile when all men volunteered for the technical jobs and all women for the news and content.

Some discussion took place as to what changes are needed and what would people like to know about. This is where your comments would be much appreciated. Have a look, give me your thoughts and I’ll pass them on to the webmaster(s) for contemplation. Click on the pic for a link.
